The Darkness is Always Soft
Concert Band • Grade 4 (Difficult)
Performance Time: 7:08

Composed after a six-day expedition through Mammoth Cave in 1996. There's more than 450 miles of known cave passages under Mammoth Cave National Park — and more is surveyed every month. I've been lucky enough to take several trips to seldom-visited parts of the cave system since that week in 1996, and this piece was written to capture the awe-inspiring size and mystery of this natural labrynth. The work combines dissonant harmonies with a very beautiful and tonal melody throughout. Highlights include bold fanfares, flowing contrapuntal lines, extensive percussion writing, and a haunting ending. An adventurous work for mature groups. (view recommended reading)
