Tecumseh: dream of democracy
Concert Band • Grade 2.5
Performance Time: 7:10

I. Harrison
II. The Prophet
III. Tecumseh

Band directors Larry Ash and David Cole at Fulton Junior High School (Indianapolis, IN) commissioned this work based on the life and story of Tecumseh. The piece was composed in conjunction with Wayne Township Schools and The Indiana State Museum, and was premiered by the Fulton Junior High Symphonic Band. Mirroring the success of the school's innovative cross-curricular study on the USS Indianapolis, an in-depth historical curriculum of study was designed to accompany the musical work. This curriculum included partnerships with local 4th grade classrooms, distance-learning lessons, visits to museums and historical sites, and the creation of multi-media student projects.

The second movement (shown above) is presented as a graphic score, based on an 1821 map of the battle ground at Tippecanoe Creek near Lafayette, Indiana. (view recommended reading)
